Louisa JEWELL
« on: Tuesday 22 September 15 14:27 BST (UK) »
According to her baptism record, Louisa was born in Siddington on 16 Nov 1835 and baptised on 10 Jan 1836. Her father was John Jewell and her mother Caroline Allen.

She is living with her parents in Siddington in 1841. By 1851, she is a servant in Castle Ward, Cirencester, aged 15 (HO107 1968 290 7).

After 1851, she disappears. I don't know whether she married or died young. Any help would be much appreciated.

Name variations include JOEL and JEWEL.

I can't see a marriage (by which I mean I can't see a marriage of a David Birch and Louisa anybody), but there is a Louisa Birch, wife of David, born in Siddington, Gloucestershire c1835 showing up in 1861 and 1901 living in Paddington, Middlesex.
I can't see them in the intervening censuses either.  David is a carrier, born in Newbury c1831 according to the 1861, or Rickmansworth c1832, according to the 1901.

1861 ref: RG 9/ Piece: 10/ Folio: 14/ Page: 22
1901 ref: RG13/ Piece: 1/ Folio: 29/ Page: 49

There don't appear to be any other girls named Louisa baptised in Siddington from 1833-1837.

Could be. There is a David Birch who dies aged 72 in Paddington, Q3 1903. This corresponds to the 1861 entry.

Very tempting, especially as I have just found a baptism for David Birch on 20 Feb 1831 in Rickmansworth to Thomas and Martha BIRCH.

So we now have the BIRCH family in all censuses from 1861 to 1911, living in the Paddington/Marylebone area of London, with the exception of 1881.

I suppose the big question is, when and where did they meet? In 1851, Louisa Jewell is still working as a servant in Cirencester. Did she meet him in Cirencester or London?

There is a William and Louisa BIRCH living at 13 Welling Place, Paddington in 1881. William is aged 60, a carman, born in Gloucester. Louisa is 50, a charwoman, b Marylebone. Their son George, aged 9, born in Paddington.

Sounds possible.

But why the numerous name changes?

And yes AVM228, I know it is the Jewell family!

All at Paddington ST Mary Magdalene :

William Birch 12 Jan 1868 David Birch , carman , and Louisa of 74 Woodchester Street
Frederick David Birch 20 Jan 1870     "  "   "                  "      of 55 Cirencester Street
Annie Florence Birch 2 Jan 1872                                           of 13 Woodchester Street

More different names !

There is a report in the newspapers in 1870 that a David Birch , carman, was charged with dangerous driving while drunk and sentenced to a fine or imprisonment . He was employed by the Great Western Railway Company in London - enough to make them move and change their names , do you think ?

Don't know if this will be of any help I was looking at the marriages of her siblings and the
witnesses to their marriages just in case one was named Louisa

from the 1841 census Louisa has a sister named Rhoda born c 1840

There was this marriage
1904 Stratton
Rhoda Freeman (born 1840) (widowed), father John Jewell (deceased)
to Thomas Telling
one of the witnesses named as Louisa HOWELL (thought this might be her)

checked Rhoda's first marriage just in case
1860 Siddington to George Freeman witnessed by John Jewell & Ann Morgan

1901 census living with George & Rhoda Freeman is a
Winifred HOWELL age 10 born Cheltenham Gloucester noted as Niece

then looked for Winifred Howell on 1891c
RG12; Piece: 2046; Folio: 153; Page: 5
she’s 6mths old with her parents named William & LOUISA born Siddington BUT she aged 28  -  so not your Louisa born c1838  :(

Just to confirm checked William & Louisa’s marriage and her surname is WELLS father Thomas
so she can be ruled out

then by chance I saw this

1871 census surname transcribed as FERMAN
Rhoda Freeman 33 born Siddington & husband George
Caroline BIRCH (transcribed Bisch) age 7 Paddington noted as NIECE

and Caroline BIRCH is still with them 1881 age 17 RG11; Piece: 2555; Folio: 95; Page: 3

for info. have added these as I was checking witnesses  just in case but NO Louisa  :(

their father named John occ Labourer but the 1904 marriage father deceased occ mason  :-\

1851 St Mary De Lode Gloucester Ann f/a (x) to Jonathan Morgan
wits Jacob Gilbert & Hannah Malpass

1853 St Mary de Lode Joseph f/a (x) to Emma Iles
wits John & Selina Iles

1854 Siddington Emily Sarah (1834)(x)  to Joseph Bellenger (x)
wits Selina Iles & Joseph Jewell (x)

1860 Siddington Leah f/a to Henry Maberly (x)
witness John Jewell (x) & Mira Jewell

1875 Siddington Edgar John f/a (x) to Emily Mary Jones
wits Joseph (x) & Kate Jewell
