Surname Gabberdey
« on: Friday 25 September 15 09:38 BST (UK) »
Researching the name Gabberdey. It has many different spellings. We have gone back to our ancestor Henry Gabedy married in 1704 in st Dunstan in the East. We found three Gabberdey's two sisters who died in the plague in the early 1600's. There father was Peter Gabberdey.  Peter and the sisters were found in st Dunstan in the west. We can't connect them. But we can only go back to 1704 Henry. We want to find the origin of the name and where they came from

Hi and welcome to Rootschat.
A quick look on familysearch shows very few of this name, all likely entries found in London. There are 2 wills found in the National Archves catalogue using the Gabedy spelling. these are both in London as well.
Obviously requiring more proof, but it is suggestive that there could be a common origin for the name; possibly a European origin?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.
