Hi Sue

I think any advice would need to be based on what you want to use it for. For example, do you want to use it primarily for internet browsing, for looking at photos, reading books, reading newspapers, doing puzzles? Or perhaps like me, all of these!

I have a Nexus 7 tablet, I use it every day and find it excellent for all of the things I've listed. The Nexus was recommended to me (on this site) and I've been really pleased with it. It's an Android device, you would need to consider whether you want Android or an ipad which runs on the Apple system. Part of that consideration should be whether you want it to sync with other devices. If this technical stuff is lost on you I'm sure someone else will be able to explain it much better than I can!

You'll also need to decide what size you want, mine (as the name suggests) is seven inches which is a nice portable size and fits in my handbag.

Hope this helps a little.  :)

Another thing to consider is how much you want to spend on it. They now range in price from under £100 for a basic tablet to over £600 for a 64GB iPad air 2.

I have an iPad Air and love it, I can do everything I can do on the laptop and it is much easier to carry around.

Thankyou Roobarb and groom for your replies. I 'm looking mainly to replace my pc as I can't use that anymore and a laptop wouldn't be of use to me either. I need something that can be held easily so I can do more research and be able to access sites , everything is too large to download even RC. Price range £100- £200. Easy to use my hands aren't good.

I wouldn't go for anything too small then, otherwise you might find the screen too small to touch unless you plan to use a stylus all the time.

The best thing is to go some where that you can play around with them and decide what size suits, then people might be able to give you some suggestions.

I have a Hudl from Tesco.

I do struggle with browsing the internet as the screen is quite small even when it's turned sideways. I don't cope well because it doesn't have a 'real' keyboard

It's fine tough for picking up emails while I'm away, taking photos, reading the paper and books, games.

Have you considered a netbook with an 11 inch screen? or a laptop with a 13 or 15 inch screen?

Bigger than a tablet but still portable.

What about something like this - a convertible?

That way you could use it as a tablet or as a laptop if you felt you needed a keyboard at anytime?

Thankyou dawnsh. I haven't heard of a netbook and neither did I know lap tops came that size, so that's something else to consider thankyou. I prefer a keyboard , I'm too heavy handed for touchscreen. Looks like I'll be having a day out with everyone's suggestions he! he!
