Thankyou again mazi.I thought it was because it's not a smart phone just an old basic one . Isn't there any difference then?

I'm puzzled by this - as far as I'm aware a smartphone is the only type of phone that you can use for internet access  ???

From what Sue says it sounds like a tablet wouldn't be suitable as she doesn't like touch screens. Dawnsh and groom suggested a netbook, that sounds like a better option.

Sue, do you have any family or friends who could advise you? A teenager is probably the ideal person! I hate the thought of you going into a shop with no technical knowledge and them foisting something unsuitable and expensive on you.

I must admit I'm a bit confused.

Sue, when you say, "My phone has some internet that's all" do you mean that you are using it as a computer or are you using it as a mobile hotspot and tethering your computer to it?

As Roobarb said, you need someone to go with you to a shop and look at suitable tablets/laptops so that you get what is suitable for you, not what they want to sell you.

I'm so sorry for the confusion. My phone is a Samsung GT-C3520 if that helps, it has some internet access but seems unable to access many sites as the pages are too large to download and others are unsupported file types . Bmd, Freereg etc all the FH sites I can't access. I have had 2 brickwalls for decades that I'd really like to solve but it's impossible with this. I will ask my son in Dec when I see him. Phone doesn't plug into internet connection, ordinary mobile phone.

Sounds to me as if a tablet with a large screen or a small laptop would suit you, together with a Pay As You Go Wireless mobile broadband (MiFi) device. Perhaps if you tell your son now what you are after he can look into it. There will probably be lots of bargains about around that time as well.

I sympathise, Sue. I have a Samsung "smartphone" which is useless for using the internet - very occasionally & painfully slowly, I can get to the odd site. But I have a very low-cost mobile phone contract so I can't complain.

I echo what others have said - do ask a younger person to advise you (your son sounds ideal). Don't be drawn into that well-known high street 'computer specialist' chain. I've still never forgotten how they sold insurance on the computer mouse to my friend's elderly mother - the insurance cost more than a new mouse!

Good luck
