Adopted G-Grandmother in Canada
« on: Sunday 04 October 15 05:03 BST (UK) »
Via family stories and in her Quebec marriage record, I have a g-grandmother adopted by a French Canadian family who was born Scottish and orphaned on their journey to Canada in the 1830s.  I believe she may have been born about 1835, but I need to know where I should look for an adoption record in order to find her Scottish roots.  I've tried reading some of the notary records in early Quebec, but have not found anything.

Hi and welcome to RootsChat.

Sorry I can't help you with Canadian records but when did adoption become formal in Canada?
Here in Scotland it did not officially come into force until 1930. Until then it was just a sort of informal type of "fostering."

Have you got her marriage certificate? If so would you be able to tell from that if her name was the same as her "adoptive" parents or different. If it is her birth name then you may be able to trace her birth record in the Old Parish Registers at Scotlands People (its a pay site) but the most comprehensive for Scottish records.

Other more experienced Rootschat people may be able to help you more with your search but I hope my info may be a helpful start.

Good luck.

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat!!
According to the Library and Archives Canada site, adoptions prior to 1847 would be found in the Notarial Records.  After 1847, you would have to look in the records of individual orphanages.

You can find lots of Notarial records at the Quebec Archives site.

Do you know when and where she died?  Would there be an obituary --- might say where in Scotland she came from?

Welcome to RC from me too  :)

Do you have her original name, to try and help with Scottish searches?
