HELP!! Higher Cemetery in EXETER
« on: Monday 05 October 15 03:06 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am so totally confused over the layout for the Higher Cemetery in Exeter. I have many family members buried there and I am convinced that some of them would definitely have a headstone but I am so lost over the meaning of the sections. If someone who has had experience with this Cemetery then please can you lend some advice!

As I understand it the system for recording locations has changed a number of times over its 150 year history. The map which is on a sign at the cemetery and also online is very complicated (in my opinion). I can see that the newer sections, HK, ZE, RC etc are pretty straight forward but most of mine are in the older part. I have visited the cemetery twice but only found one out of around 25!

The one I found was Mary Ann Hodge who in the record says the locality is:

Section: D
Division: -
Number: 249C

This grave was in the square on the map marked C8 - C10

It makes no sense!!

Another one, my great-grandfather Charles Percy Bromley reads:

Section: D
over both Division and Number says: G82

As far as I can tell there is not a single "G" or even one implied anywhere on the map.

Anyone want to try to help figure it out.......?

I have ancestors there too.

I found this, which might explain things a little.

Quote
Section: mostly refers to class of grave – older sections had expensive (class D) graves by the path, then class C, class B and finally small, mostly unpurchased graves in the centre. We generally ignore this for location purposes although it can be a confirmation that we have the right grave.

Division is the plot reference and Number the grave number within that plot.

Unfortunately there are very many different systems that have been used over the years and some references may be unclear.

Interment number: each cemetery has its own unique burial register numbering system, the only exceptions are miscarried babies prior to 24 weeks gestation and scattered cremated remains which have their own numbering system, again unique to each site.

Yes I know where mine are but they aren't that old. The system looks incredibly complex and confusing.

Hello

Interested to note Charles Percy Bromley has been entered a Diss. [Dissenter / Dissenting], a Nonconformist.

Also the cross reference to another Interment / Burial Number, likely under Nuttall, which could be very useful for the family historian, if there was an undiscovered link.

No such luck with my mystery Ancestor, they have managed to lose the Plan.
