Albert Holgate Sedman marriage 1901-1911
« on: Monday 05 October 15 10:15 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I wonder if anyone can help me out here, please?
I know that in 1901 Albert Holgate Sedman (b.1878, S'boro) was at home in Fish Yard, Scarborough, with his parents and siblings but by 1911 he is boarding in the house of Thomas Ingram in 10 Edgar St, Hessle, Hull and he is married.
Clearly he wed between those two years but I cannot find any marriage to match.
Can someone who is a little more au fait with such problems please assist?

Absolutely not and that's the problem. ;)
I only know the details from the 1901 (where he is a bachelor) and 1911 (where he is married) censuses.
I can't find a marriage using his full name or even for an Albert Sedman in that range of dates.
Could be in either S'boro or Hull area, but really I have no idea!

So she is not living with him then  :-\  Does it give any indication how long he has been married or whether he has children

Ah, yes - missed that bit!
He has one completed year and one living child.
Suppose that makes it a 1910 marriage then ...

WOW! Just as an aside, I've noticed that Thomas and Mary Ingram (in whose house he is boarding) have had EIGHTEEN KIDS and they're 54. Ouch!! :o

There's a GRO death entry:

Name:   Albert H Sedman
Birth Date:   1879
Date of Registration:   Sep 1935
Age at Death:   56
Registration district:   Hull
Inferred County:   Yorkshire East Riding
Volume:   9d
Page:   275

It might be worthwhile getting a copy of the death certificate to see who registered the death.

There are not many births for children with surname Sedman in the Hull/Scarborough area.
Have you tried to find those children in 1911, to see if there is a spare Mother around?

When does he use the name 'Holgate' as he is not registered at birth with it?

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, I had already tracked down the death in Hull in 1935; I won't be ordering the certificate because, to be honest, he is only a tiny leaf on a very long stem, on a long branch, on a very large tree! :D

As for the Holgate element, that was his mother's maiden name. It first appears in the 1911 census, the first time that he is away from his family.

And I've not yet managed to track down a widow with a child in the Hull area. This is further complicated by the possibility that she might be visiting family without the child.
