Henry Miers born 1811 Whitehaven
« on: Monday 05 October 15 16:25 BST (UK) »
Henry Miers was born about 1811 at Whitehaven. He lived in St Bees appearing on the 1841 to 1871 census as well as several electoral registers and trade directories listed as joiner and cabinet maker. His marriage to Jane (Jackson?) produced at least five children. His daughter Mary Ann Miers 1848 was married and had her children christened at St Nicholas Church Whitehaven.
I would like to find a birth record for Henry and to discover his parents names. Their is a marriage record for a Henry Miers and a Jane Jackson for 10 June 1834 at St Nicholas.
Any help or advice much appreciated.

The Carlisle Journal and Carlisle Patriot both announced the marriage of "Mr. Henry Myers, joiner, to Miss Jane Jackson".

Thanks Stephen,
That proves Jane Jackson is indeed Henry's wife. It appears that Myers and Miers are interchangeable on a lot of records including trade directories that list Henry's business and shop. Still struggling to find the couples parents though.
Cheers

I noticed searching on Google that the papers added: "..., confectioner".

The son Jackson turns out to have been registered as MEIER in JUN 1838, which looks like the German name. IGI doesn't seem to have any baptisms. Jackson "Miers" was mentioned here, along with brother Henry, accountant at the Whitehaven News office:

Henry snr seems to have quite a diverse group of business interests. Theres a possible record for a victualler in whitehaven. Throughout the census returns Whitehaven is given as the place of birth.
His daughter Mary Ann married George Reid at St Nicholas Church and registered the birth of their children there even though they lived in Barrow.
On the volunteers list is a family of Jackson's who own a timber yard, perhaps Henry was a customer when carrying out his joinery business and took a fancy to the owners daughter?
I have tried searching for an apprentice list for whitehaven online without result, perhaps some record survives at the Whitehaven Archives.
Cheers

I've noticed there was a Henry Main baptized at Whitehaven Holy Trinity 12 Oct 1810, birthdate given on IGI as 28 Jun 1810. Parents were Henry and Jane. Can't find any further trace of a Henry Main.

Possible parents to this Henry were the John Henry Mires and Jane "Puttinson" who married at the same church 12 Sep 1809, or about 9 months before the birth of Henry "Main".

Cheers,

Stephen

Thanks Stephen,
That's a real possibility with Miers being mistranscribed as Main.
Thanks
