There's no question of "bothering"!! This is what this site is all about.

http://leicester.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/compoundobject/collection/p16445coll4/id/64221/rec/3

If the URL doesn't work, its on page 471* of the Directory I gave you.

*it's page 471 in the actual book but it's page 478 on the page index.

Brilliant, I've found it. I had no idea that you could find all of this out from the directories, it opens everything up and now I want to go over other bits of my family an search them.
I really appreciate it, thank you

Historical Directories (on line) is a great resource.

Best of luck with the search.

If anyone finds any more information on the Duke's Head Skinburness I'd love to know.
Foster Penrice is my 3rd great grandfather

Thanks

William Penrice

W_Penrice,
A very, very warm welcome to Rootschat.

According to the Carlisle Journal, April 1842 the Duke's Head Inn, Skinburness was up for auction, described as -
"... well accustomed inn or public house, known by the name of Duke's Head Inn, situate at Skinburness aforesaid, with a good stable, slaughter house and gardens behind the same, now in the occupation of Foster Penrice".

In December 1838 several newspapers reported

"LARGE HEIFER - last week Mr Foster Penrice, of Skinburness,  slaughtered a fine two year old heifer of the North of England breed which reached the extraordinary weight of forty four stones ..."

If, in 1842, Foster was "declining the trade" of publican he appears to have had a fall back option!!
