John Smith - born approx 1844...
« on: Tuesday 06 October 15 03:51 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone!

I've been trying to track down my great grandfather john Smith who immigrated to Australia in 1865 aboard the ship St. Hilda.

On the passenger manifest he has his place of origin as Lorrha in County Tipperary but I've been unable to find any birth/baptism details for a  John Smith born circa 1844 to parents George and Catherine in Tipperary.

However, my mother has always maintained that she was told that John Smith was from County Cork so I was wondering if anyone might be able to know of a John Smith who matches the above criteria for County Cork - parents/dob/etc....

Any help/insight to this quandary would be gratefully appreciated!

Kind regards,
Mario

Hi There

Just because you haven't 'found' him in Tipperary doesn't mean that he wasn't from there.

Where / What sites have you used ?

Have you any records from OZ which will give his mother's maiden name ?

I don't see any reason to believe that John was Cork.

They may have sailed FROM Cork and that may be where the confusion is.

I would stick with Tipperary for now.

To that end I shall post any finds on the Tipperary board.

Tara,

Thanks for your help. I've mainly used GV and forums to try and track John Smith. Unfortunately I don't have any maiden name for John's mother. I'll move back to the Tipperary thread and keep it all in the one place....

Cheers,
Mario
