What chance of finding someone WITHOUT an age or address.
« on: Thursday 08 October 15 03:12 BST (UK) »
What chance would I have of tracing a Barbara Newman  - England 1707.  That's all the info I have but I don't think its enough as Newman was a common name, although in 1707 I don't think Barbara was.

Any suggestions or would I be wasting my time?

Thanks

Any chance of tracing a Barbara Newman 1707.  NO age or address and I know Newman was a common name but I don't think Barbara was in 1707

Would I be wasting time and effort trying to trace this lady/girl?

Thanks

Since you don't seem to have any more info about her, would this be the Barbara Newman born 1707, whose sampler work is very popular on EBay?

I was googling the name and date, and it brought up loads of her samplers being auctioned.  They seem to be very popular!   I just wondered if maybe there may be something inscribed on the back of them, and you may be able to contact a seller (or buyer) through eBay!

Yes,  I bought the sampler because it is a type I wanted. However the frame is old but not old enough.  No history from seller either.  I always buy samplers that have a full name and age and a town but thought I'd take a chance with this one.

thanks

Sorry nothing at all  - just a name and date.  But I do know she was fairly wealthy and English.

thanks

Very interesting. Is that the one sampler being advertised on various ebay (and other sites)? Or are there more than one of the same sampler?

Where did the seller get the sampler from?

It's very pretty and in very good condition. Would you say that 1707 would be an accurate age for this? I love samplers, and have a couple though I know virtually nothing about samplers.  :)

Does Barbara say how old she is by any chance? It is possible if she is older that Newman might be her married name. If you guess that she was about 20 in 1707, this would give her a birth year of 1687, and she could have been substantially older than 20 when she sewed this.

Seems to be quite a number of her samplers on eBay and elsewhere that came up when I googled her name!

Trying a search for birth of Barbara Newman in England from 1640 to 1695 (years I just plucked out of the air), there is one contributed result on the IGI:

birth 1682 Evercreech Somerset father Richard Newman, mother Grace Edmonds

..... and one indexed result:
chr 2 Dec 1663 St Edmunds Salisbury Wiltshire parents John and Barbara

Changing the parameters will probably yield different results.

Even with only one or two results, there is no way of knowing which, if any, are your Barbara. We don't know her year of birth, place of birth, whether or not Newman is her married name .... births possibly not registered, records lost or damaged, plus any number of other possible scenarios.

Frustrating though it is I suspect you will never know for sure if you have the right Barbara.

Where the seller got the sampler from (location wise), might help?  :-\
