Seems to be quite a number of her samplers on eBay and elsewhere that came up when I googled her name!

I didn't look too closely but only noticed one (the framed one) on several different sites. You wouldn't expect too many survivors from over 300 years ago, and you would not expect more than one or two attributable to the same person. :-\

Sorry nothing at all  - just a name and date.  But I do know she was fairly wealthy and English.

thanks

Presumably you think she was wealthy due to the materials she used and the fact that the more wealthy and idle were the ones who had the spare time to make samplers.

But how do you know she was English? Are there some clues in the sampler?

Is this yours?

reproductions available  :o

I have several copies of samplers made from old patterns and some in kit form. How do I know they are copies?? I made 'em  8) They are often by very young girls, one of mine is by a 9 year old. I think by the time the embroiderer was older, she would have moved on to more sophisticated items.

"I was googling the name and date, and it brought up loads of her samplers being auctioned.  They seem to be very popular!"
Jeanne, I think the sampler on Ebay is the same one, just being sold on foreign sites.

They are lovely aren't they, and I am amazed at the survival rate.

So is this your sampler Eliza? Did you purchase from the auctioneer?

I'm a bit confused. Is there only one of these samplers which seems to be doing the rounds? eg sold unframed, then resold after framing, then resold on ebay?  :-\

The sampler seems to have the same repair, on the right hand side, a small hole that has been mended. Surely in this case it can only be the one sampler. If any others had damage it would not be an identical place and repair ???
The unframed one from Live auctions has the hole visible and the framed ones it is repaired.
