How to find out who lived at a particular address
« on: Monday 12 October 15 10:09 BST (UK) »
Hello
I would like to know if it is possible to find out who lived at a particular address in 1934.  I am searching for a relative Charlotte Hunting (nee Warburton) who travelled from South Africa in 1934 to visit someone at the address 29 Rose Hill, Bolton.  I do not know who she would be visiting as I do not have the names of her parent or siblings.

Thank you
Jean Jones

Directories, electoral rolls, ratebooks; you could ask Bolton Libraries for help http://www.boltonmuseums.org.uk/ask-bolton-libraries

FindMyPast has electoral registers on line - if you have access to that. Given the odd things their search engine is throwing up, putting "Rose Hill" in as a person's name will probably get you the right road. ;D

Just tried my own tongue in cheek suggestion and it actually does!

At number 29 , Bernard Warburton, Martha Ardis and William & Annie Elizabeth Morris.
That was 1929 - so looks like you have a Warburton connection.

Freebmd has a Bernard Warburton born Bolton district 1902, dies in 1934 and possibly the one who marries the previous year to Ellen M Bolton - all in Bolton district.
You should then be able to find his parents on 1911 census and see if he fits your family.

Bernard and his wife Nellie were struck by a van and killed whilst returning from visiting his wife's father

Oh dear, and only been married a year, that is tragic.

It looks like Martha Aldis was the wife of Alexander Aldis, her maiden name being Warburton. They married in 1910. In 1901 she is with her married sister Mary Ann. In 1891 with the same sister before she married, but also with them is a younger sister Charlotte. Charlotte is 18 in 1891, so I'm wondering if that fits with the Charlotte who visited from South Africa.

This is weird - Newspapers of  March 1934 record the death of Bernard and Nellie (Ellen) of Rose Hill. They apparently died December 16th (1933)  Maybe the death certificates were not issued until after the court case of the van driver.

Their marriage was Q3 1933 and the article I've just found says they died on November 12th and they had been married only two months.
Perhaps you're right and deaths couldn't be registered until after the court case. The driver was convicted of manslaughter, maybe that has to be recorded on the death cert?

The deaths would have been registered by the coroner after an inquest, not necessarily a court case for the van driver.

Even now, deaths are registered months or years after the event if the inquest drags on.
