What British Regiments were in Ireland 1917-1920
« on: Monday 12 October 15 12:49 BST (UK) »
Trying to ID how my granddad Thomas Arthur Robinson born Aston 1898 arrived in Ireland.
I know he was a Soldier as stated on his 1919 wedding cert.

Any help gratefully accepted as this is the missing piece

Regards
Martin

There were a multitude.  The whole of the island of Ireland was at that time part of the United Kingdom and units were stationed in all parts as they were in the other constituent states.  Might have more luck looking for him and trying to tie him to a particular unit.  Do you have more info, parents perhaps, wife's name.

He doesn't come up in any Army search so trying to ID what regiments were there in 1918/1919 and then seeing if said regt has any records
Any way to ID which ones actually in Ireland?

There's a Thomas Arthur Robinson appearing first in 1936 Absent Voter's list.

&
Thomas Arthur Robinson 306004 Sgt. Major D Coy. 7th. Res. Batt. R.W.R.
88a Myrtle Grove, Pugh Rd. Aston. Married to a Maud Margaret appearing on the 1918 Absent Voter's list.
Edit:
Not him as he appears to have married a Maud Margaret Madeley in 1908.

I know it sounds unhelpful but this really is mission pretty near impossible.  To give you an idea of the scale of the task, may I suggest that you have a look at the excellent www.1914-1918.net.  Put "regiments in Ireland" in the search box.  That brings up 189 references to regiments where some or part of the Great War were spent in Ireland.  Although the site is excellent, I doubt that even that set of references is totally comprehensive.

Does his wedding cert give his abode perhaps ie which barracks.  Does the family have medals or other memorabilia that might give clues?

DUH

I just noted his age, of course he wouldn't have been a soldier in 1911.

Hi Martin

If he was still a soldier after about August 1920 his record will still be with the MOD. It would be easier to ask them if  they have him.

If you find a 7 digit number that will also tell you his regiment. Where was he married, and have you got a civilian certificate or a church record? You should also look for a regimental marriage on FIndmypast.
