COMPLETED - Torpoint marriage lookup - James Enoch BENTLEY
« on: Saturday 17 October 15 23:28 BST (UK) »
I have found 2 marriage entries for James Enoch Bentley in 1895.
One on 29 April 1895 in Dresden, Staffordshire to Elizabeth Loffill daughter of John. His father is Samuel. Both fathers are deceased and were potters.
The other is 31 Mar 1895 in Torpoint, Cornwall with a spouse listed as Elizabeth Loffell but doesn't list a father in the transcription record.
I was wondering if someone with access to the records could check to see if the marriages are for the same people (marrying twice in 2 different counties within a month).
Thanks in advance.

I would imagine that at least 1 of the entries is a Banns?

FreeBMD shows just one marriage:

June qtr 1895
Stone Registration District     vol 6b, page 67

Bentley, James Enoch
+ and on the same page +
Loffill, Elizabeth

Dresden was in Trentham parish, which itself is part of the Stone Registration District.

I did wonder if that would be the case.
The Staffordshire entry is a marriage as the parish records are on findmypast and I have seen the marriage entry.
The Cornwall entry just states familysearch as the source and gives date as "marriage date". Nothing obvious to show it was banns and not an actual marriage ceremony.
Was hoping someone with access to parish register could check and see if there was actually a marriage occurring.
Thanks for your response.

There's nothing showing on either FreeBMD or Cornwall OPC Database.

FreeBMD, of course, shows the GRO Indexes - and all marriages had to be registered.
So, if it's not on the indexes, then it didn't take place ;D

Thanks.
I thought I had read somewhere that it is known that GRO indexes are not always complete and that missing entries can occur (especially around end of quarters). That's why I thought I'd ask if there was anything in the parish records.
Thanks again.

the banns show up on the opc database

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=banns&id=55872

According to the parish coverage, parish marriages in Torpoint are complete for that period on the database. The bride's residence is Stone & the groom's HMS Cambridge, so the marriage being in Stone seems very probable.

Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman
Cards: Thomas (Llanbadarn Fawr)
Glam: Bowler, Cram, Galloway, James, Thomas, Watkins
Lincs: Coupland, Cram
Mon: Cram, Gwyn, John, Philpot, Smart, Watkins
Pembs: Edwards (St. Dogmael's)
Yorks: Airey, Bowler, Elliott, Hare, Hewitt, Kellett, Kemp, Stephenson, Tebb

There is some info here:

So, a gunnery school in 1895.
