Grainger family, Durban
« on: Sunday 18 October 15 19:27 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I'm looking for information on the Grainger family, specifically Ellen Grainger.  She died in Durban in 1931.  She had been married to Gilbert McNicol and had a least two children. (Nadine in 1915, and Graham.  Graham may have had a twin who died at or shortly after birth).  I don't know when she was born but the assumption is that it was probably around 1885.  Again we assume she was born in Durban.

Ellen had a sister called Ida who married Chester Jones who was a boxing referee.  Ida died in 1964.

Ellen's father Joshua was apparently buried in the Wesleyan Burial Ground in Durban on August 13, 1894.  He was born in Britain and had a brother who was a building contractor and known as JYT Grainger.  JYT was married to Lydia (maiden name unknown at this stage) and had three children (Lydia, Rita and Willie)

Not much to go on I realise, but worth a try!  Any information gratefully received!

Thanks in advance

You are more than welcome, South African research is not easy as records are not digitized except for those on our Archives and then it's only an indication of the file contents

I always try Family Search first as they  now have quite a lot of South African records and often there is an image attached which you can print out and add to your records and best of all it's FREE!!!

You will be amazed at the variations that you will find.  ;D I have in my search for ancestors.

Thanks papmpoen!

@3sillydogs, I've found a number of siblings for Ellen on Family Search and got more details on her parents.  Can't wait to get stuck in further there!  Will also have to run all my other South African connections though there.   :)

Looking through the baptism records there is a Sydney born in 1893 where the i creeps into Granger.

Some interesting info on the baptisms - on two separate occasions there are two siblings baptised on the same day.  One pair were 14 and 12 years old which leads me to think they weren't exactly regular church goers  :)

Thanks again for the help and suggestions!
