Wilson family - Northumberland
« on: Tuesday 20 October 15 11:02 BST (UK) »
I am tracing our gg grandfather John Wilson and Ellen Sym who left Northumberland around 1875 - 1880, they were married and would have had a small boy John Stewart Wilson, and maybe other siblings. They travelled to New Zealand. Can anyone help, can not find marriage or birth info on them in Northumberland. Brick wall. Appreciate any assistance

I think we can eliminate this birth
March qtr 1879  John Stewart Wilson -  S. Shields    10a   690

He appears to be the son of Benjamin & Mary

Have you checked Scottish records for the marriage  :-\

ADDED - When would John snr & Ellen have been born

The only marriage I can see in the right time frame for a John Wilson in Northumberland is in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1879 - volume 10B page 22 (from England & Wales Marriages).

Possible spouses are Ellen Seton/ Ellen Seaton or Eleanor Forrest - not Sim  :(

Where have you obtained the wife's maiden name from please? Is it from a birth certificate of a child - or an Australian death certificate maybe?

If you have a death certificate - that should also give an age - so that a birth year can be established.

I also suppose that 'Ellen' may have originally been Helen or Eleanor.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Hi

New Zealand Marriage certificate (1894) give parents surnames and lists him as being born in Northumberland. His first marriage certificate has him (John Stewart Wilson)as being born 1870.
Death certificate says born 1873 and arrived NZ when he was 5yrs of age. So possibly marriage certificate could be correct but then they lied a lot when marrying someone younger; but she was same age, big guess really and a brick wall.

Does the marriage certificate have any witnesses that could indicate other family members

Have checked witnesses, no relation. I have had no luck finding anything on the parents or them arriving on a boat, way to many Wilsons arriving in that time frame in New Zealand. Also way to many Ellen/Helen/Eleanor marry John/Jack Wilsons to even have a guess at buying the correct one. Have no idea on other siblings. Did the census and the first one available shows him married and living with his wife, no others residing with them. Checked all censuses and never any older people with him, as sometimes they more in when one parent dies. But no luck he was also dead at 60 , had two wives, the second wife was half sister to the first wife. I have access to ancestry, but have very little on Northumberland on line. Did subscribe to family past for month but no luck like you said. Unless sym is incorrect, people did change names on travelling to leave ex hubby or something behind.

Familysearch has quite a few Northumberland records including copies of parish registers.
https://familysearch.org/search

But without knowing where he really came from it is a shot in the dark as a lot of it is only browseable.  :(
