If you look at the shape of the words 'Thomas' and 'Francis' they are very similar and do get confused (especially if a record is difficult to read). Try this test and you'll probably see what I mean- write the two names on a piece of paper one under the other then turn the paper upside down  ;)

If you are lucky the give away between the two is a dot on the i in Francis
but that's not always there

20 April 1843 (not 1842), right page, 10th entry down, Catherine Morrison:

Edited to add:  Must admit, looks like Thomas rather than Francis to me.

Just posting the originals so that everyone can make their mind up, the quality isn't that bad if you zoom in sufficiently. Catherine's sibling Edward Morrison was baptised on 22 April 1840, left page, 6th entry down from top of page (father looks like Francis to me):

Sibling Patrick Morrison's baptism was on 5 August 1845, right page, 8th entry down from top of page (father looks like Francis to me):

Francis.... in Latin!

They were Roman Catholics, I am toying with the idea that Thomas was his middle name, but have not come across the likes before :-\

I'm not sure what you mean by this, could he not have been Thomas Francis or Francis Thomas?

Yes I can see what you mean now (Thomas does look like Francis) . When I said I had not come ac cross this before I meant most of the old BMDs only give the one name, thanks again everyone. I have five children for Ann and Francis but cannot find the birth or baptism of James as for Edward and Patrick I think they must have died young as when the family moved to England around 1850 but no trace of them since there baptisms.
