Ticehurst - 1801 Census
« on: Friday 23 October 15 20:28 BST (UK) »
Hi, this request links to these previous posts http://www.rootschat.com/links/01gcg/ about Isaac Tuppenny Austen.

I am reasonably convinced that Isaac Tuppenny Austen was the illegitimate child of an Isaac Tuppenny so looked for his ancestors.

Unfortunately there seem to be 3 Isaac Tuppenny's around in Ticehurst at the appropriate time - a blacksmith, a publican and one with an unknown occupation so hopefully labourer.

Is anyone with access to the 1801 Ticehurst census able to let me know how many Isaac's were in Ticehurst then and provide whatever info is available to try and help me sort them out please.

Regards, Pheno

Hi Pheno,

Do not have the 1801 census but in the 1785 Land Tax Records there was the following:

In the Town Borough Mr Isaac Tuppeny owned 2 pieces of land, one looks as though it was previously owned by Mr Daniel Watsons.

In the Hoadly and Pashly Borough a Mr Isaac Tuppeny owned a piece of land occupied by Mrs Tuppeny (widow).

Following on from other info you mentioned about Tuppenys and their association with Sedlescombe.

The Tuppenys in Sedlescombe seem to be more related to Blacksmithing, there are a number of references to their work:
Iron Fence surrounding Sedlescombe School made by Mr Tuppenny
Mr Tuppenny had a forge at Balcombe Green/Long Lane

Other interesting stuff revolves around Mr Tuppeny being instrumental in the division of the congregational church to the extent that they built a separate one next door. Eventually the rift was healed and the building was converted into cottages.

And finally in the 1747 Window and House Tax for Ticehurst there are mentions of

Mr Isaac Tuppeny Junior (looks to be a big house (17 lights)
William Tupeny (Normal House 9 lights)
John Tuppeny (Normal House 9 lights)

On a side note this will contains reference to Isaac Tuppenny so might prove useful.

Hi John, am revisiting the Tuppenny's as I still have not confirmed my Isaac although pretty sure I have narrowed it down and noticed that I seem to have overlooked a massive thank you for the census info you provided above.

So thankyou - just a tad late.
