Oliver Black Donegal

Hello
I'm researching my great grandfather Oliver Black born about 1876 and was listed as being a postmaster before his death circa 1919. He possibly came from Donegal and had a son James Sephen Black born about 1898 in Tyrone.

Where was Oliver in 1901 ?

Do you have his marriage cert ?

Hi Tara

Thanks for your message. I only have my grandfather's marriage certificate from 1919 which states that his father was Oliver Black postmaster deceased. My grandfather was born in Tyrone (I think) but I'm unable to find any birth certificate. The only Oliver Blacks I can find on line in the 1901 census are from Donegal but neither married. One died after 1919 (about 1930's) and the other would have been in his 60's when my grandfather was born (not impossible I guess). Both were farmers. My grandfather was listed in the 1911 census as living as a boarder with Maggie, Isabella and James Black in Tyrone. No sign of him in the 1901 census but there was a James Black aged 3 grandson of a Patrick Currin in Donegal and a James Black nephew of a William Black in Tyrone. Difficult to tie all this in with the right Oliver.

Was there ever any mention of who James' mother was ?

Are you presuming that the James living with his uncle in 1911 is your Grandfather or is it fact ?

Hi Tara

I think the Drumahoe James in 1911 possibly is as I was given a poem he may have written (looks like his handwriting) to Maggie Black after she died in 1921.  It was found in her bible and handed to me by her great grandson whom I met through my ancestry search. Also James had his daughter (my aunt Violet) baptised in the local church there in 1921, the year Maggie died, and gave her second and third names Margaret Isabella. 

The James in the 1901 census is which is frustrating as Oliver Black is not a common name.

No mention of his mother either. He was given the middle name Stephen so could have been a family maternal name I guess.
