Also.....according to the belfast street directories and my dad's birth certificate, James spent time in the RUC about 1923 but again, no records to be found!!!!

A 5 year variant is run of the mill so I wouldn't worry about that.

What did James name his children BTW ?

Hum

The name Oliver didn't pass on.

Makes you wonder.

I can only see 2 James born in Tyrone in your timeframe.

One son of an Andrew

One son of an Alexander

Re the lack of records for James

I was helping someone a while back who couldn't find an ancestor.

Long story short, the ancestors father died and his Mum remarried.

The chap was partially reared under his new father's surname.

Looking for records was a nightmare as he would flip from using his birth name, to his adopted name and back again.

Not saying the same applies to James but a variant might be possible.

Re the James with Maggie and Isabella in 1911 ~ have you researched these two ladies ?

Re Maggie and Isabella. I have made contact with another Black who is the great grandson of Maggie. His grandfather was the other James Black in the 1911 census aged 25 and he married Matilda Black (Black married Black). I think maggie and isabella they came from Badoney Tyrone but again things are vague. Are they sisters, cousins or sisters in law?

Interesting that Maggie ran the post office in either Ardsdraw or Douglasbridge, can't remember which and they seemed to have taken  in young boarders.
