I had wondered about the sailor chap. I think his family moved to Scotland at some point but can't find the dates.

Yes that's the same Maggie and Isabella. It's very possible his parents weren't married but i'm not sure as those things didn't get talked about in those days.

I guess he could have started out as James Gallagher as I keep finding links between Blacks and Gallaghers in my research. The Oliver Black who died in 1930's married a Gallagher later in life and his sister Charlotte also married a Gallagher.

He married in Devon. He was 23. My grandmother Eleanor Mary Wheeler was born in Gloucester and her father moved to Devon with his work on the railways. Strange that James ended up working in Exeter as a clerk in a garage in 1919. Not an obvious place for a young man to move to from Tyrone. James and Eleanor (Molly)  later moved to Gloucester for a short time before moving to Belfast in 1921.
