This is the first time that I’ve tried to post a message, so please accept my apologies if I haven’t got the protocols right.
I wonder if anyone has my grandmother, Emily LEEK, on their family tree, please? She was born on 23 February 1881 (information from my mother) and died at Binton, Warwickshire on 21 March 1939 aged 58 (information from her gravestone). Census entries give her place of birth as Stratford.
She was baptised on 10.3.1881 at Holy Trinity, Stratford-upon-Avon, the daughter of Mary Ann SMITH, a single woman. Mary Ann married William Thomas LEEK at the same church on 4.4.1881, the day after the 1881 census night; but I cannot trace them on that census and the Register Office staff cannot trace a birth anywhere in Warwickshire.
Emily was baptised a second time, at Binton, on 20.5.1881, after her parents’ marriage. William is stated then, and on later census entries at Binton, and on Emily’s own marriage certificate, to be her father; her birth may therefore have been registered as Emily Smith or possibly Emily Leek.
There are numerous entries at various places on FreeBMD for Emily Smith, one of which may be correct if they ‘went away’ for the birth – but so far I have no clue as to which one. Equally, they may have failed to register the birth and/or failed to respond to the census enumerator.
You can see from the above that I know quite a bit about Emily, certainly enough to include her on my tree, but I would like to answer the above questions if I can. In particular, I would like to be able to get a birth certificate. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
