Emily Leek
« on: Tuesday 27 October 15 07:27 GMT (UK) »
This is the first time that I’ve tried to post a  message, so please accept my apologies if I haven’t got the protocols right.

I wonder if anyone has my grandmother, Emily LEEK, on their family tree, please?  She was born on 23 February 1881 (information from my mother) and died at Binton, Warwickshire on 21 March 1939 aged 58 (information from her gravestone).  Census entries give her place of birth as Stratford.

She was baptised on 10.3.1881 at Holy Trinity, Stratford-upon-Avon, the daughter of Mary Ann SMITH, a single woman.  Mary Ann married William Thomas LEEK at the same church on 4.4.1881, the day after the 1881 census night; but I cannot trace them on that census and the Register Office staff cannot trace a birth anywhere in Warwickshire.

Emily was baptised a second time, at Binton, on 20.5.1881, after her parents’ marriage. William is stated then, and on later census entries at Binton, and on Emily’s own marriage certificate, to be her father; her birth may therefore have been registered as Emily Smith or possibly Emily Leek.

There are numerous entries at various places on FreeBMD for Emily Smith, one of which may be correct if they ‘went away’ for the birth – but so far I have no clue as to which one.  Equally, they may have failed to register the birth and/or failed to respond to the census enumerator.

You can see from the above that I know quite a bit about Emily, certainly enough to include her on my tree, but I would like to answer the above questions if I can.  In particular, I would like to be able to get a birth certificate.  Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Welcome and you posted that just fine  :)

Where is the birth place for Mary Ann the mother?  That might help with where her daughter was born.

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Many thanks for your welcome!

Mary Ann was born in Stratford and I have traced her with her parents in Stratford in 1871 census, but not in 1881.  My guess is that they went away for the birth, but I have no clues as to where, and none of the "possible" places on BMD ring any bells.

Grateful for your help!

While typing, have just read another reply from KGarrad - thank you so much for that, I will investigate now!

I'm afraid that you could well be on a bit of a wild goose chase here.Even if you were to find  a Birth Certificate for the Emily Smith, there is no guarantee that it would move you any further forward. It may well be unliikely that any father's details would be on the Cert.In any event if the father was known his name would be on any Marriage Cert when she married.

Thank you all so much!

I have looked up the census entry for that family and it seems quite clear that Mary Ann's surname given then was Bliss.  I shall have to look again at the baptism and other entries i quoted to see if I can work out how/why the two names of Smith and Bliss came into it.

But on my first use of Rootschat, I am much further down the road than from I was all my other enquiries, thanks again everyone!

Whilst it may well be that her father was William Tho mas Leek, you will perhaps never be 100 per cent certain.
