Where is Marianne Fielding CORY (nee SPRING) post 1901?
« on: Tuesday 27 October 15 10:34 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any suggestions to help me find this woman and unravel this mystery...

Background to Marianne...Born abt 1878 Cluny, Aberdeenshire to Georgina Fielding and Alexander Spring, marries an Ernest Richard Haines CORY in the Panmure Hotel in Edzell in October of 1897 at the time of the marriage his age is given as 42, occupation, physician. In 1901 they are living with Ernest's brother Frederick William Cory at Tower House, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Hampshire. Marianne and Ernest look to have had three children the youngest being Dorothy May CORY born in 1905.

In 1911 Dorothy, showing age 5 is living with Marianne's aunts Mary Ann and Margaret Fielding in Stonehaven. Dorothy lives with the aunts until their deaths in 1919 (they leave the bulk of their estate to her grand niece Dorothy).

I had assumed Dorothy was an orphan and that Marianne and Ernest had died before 1911 but I was wrong. Ernest can be found on the 1911 census living with his aunts in Martham, Flegg, Norfolk - census details show married, three children - needless to say no children of wife with Ernest.  I have the death certificate for Marianne who dies in Stonehaven in 1922. I think I've found their oldest son Charles Horace Fielding CORY born 1901 in a boarding school in 1911 but no sign of his brother Harry Alexander F. CORY born 1902. Marianne alludes me from 1901 till her death in 1922...

What were the circumstances of Marianne's death? If she was in e.g. an asylum that might explain why she is so hard to find.  Who was the informant?

I see that Ernest died in Norfolk in 1919.

avm228 thanks for asking that question  :)  Marianne died of TB age 44 - a nurse signed the death certificate.

I think she may be found! In 1911 as a patient at 25 Ophir Road, Bournemouth - from the census it looks like a small establishment with six female patients the youngest 27 the oldest 78. I wonder if this was the onset of her TB? Like Ernest she too is showing as married with three children born and three still living so that leaves me with Harry to find in 1911.

Thanks

I fear this family are going to put me in the poorhouse! I found little Harry aged 8 in a boarding school in Aberdeen in 1911. His maternal grandmother, Georgina Fielding Spring is also living in Aberdeen in 1911 along a woman called Gertrude Alice Bush. it looks like Gertrude's 13 year old daughter is in the same school as Harry which explains why she's not with her mother on the census.

25 Ophir Rd, where you have found Marianne in 1911, appears as Ophir Lodge Nursing Home in various 20th century records.  You may be able to find a reference somewhere to what conditions were treated there around 1911.  There is obviously a considerable gap between 1911 and her death from TB in 1922.

I've had a look for anyone dying at the Ophir Lodge Nursing Home in Bournemouth around 1911. There's an newspaper article regarding a certain Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Jebb who died there in 1915 looks like he was definitely failing mentally and perhaps suffering with a bit of a drink problem.

Hi Maggie and welcome to Rootschat,

What a terribly sad family this has turned out to be. I'm taken aback that Harry died in an orphanage this must have been one of the most dysfunctional families of the century! So in 1917 both parents are still alive while Harry is in an orphanage in Aberlour and his sister Dorothy is in Stonehaven living with her grandmother's sisters. I wonder what happened to the oldest boy, Charles Horace Fielding Cory he would be about 16 at the time of his brother's death.

I have searched the data I have, with no success for a Horace.  I have a document put together by my mother who was a genealogist in Scotland.  It is, I think, just any info she could find about the Cory family in Scotland.  Cory was my maiden name.
