How long would it take to get back to the UK then? If the date of Ethel's birth is right - 23 May 1878, it must have been a close thing that she wasn't born at sea!

I wonder what happened to Frederick John Bastin (born Dec qtr 1864). Not named as a child on arrival and can't see a death in UK prior to leaving.

The same ship on another voyage UK to Australian later the same year left on 31 July and arrived on 24 October.  Not sure whether Australia to UK was likely to be slower or faster.

Are you certain that Frederick is their child? He doesn't appear in any of the family trees on Ancestry.

Staffordshirebmd gives mother maiden name in its online listing for a number of births. Birth of Frederick John Bastin in 1864 has MMN of Cornish.
Given the unusual combination of parents surnames it seems highly probable but not confirmed as do not have actual birth certificate.

 This might be worth looking at. FindMyPast have Frederick's birth registered with his name spelled as Frederic John and looking at the actual image that is what it says, no K.

If so, this could be his death
