Parish Records
« on: Wednesday 28 October 15 16:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I have come to a birth in my family tree 1813.

George Smith born 1813   On all census for George it states that he was born in Northenden, Cheshire I cannot find any details of a baptism at St Wilfrids I would have expected him to have been baptised their if he was born in Northenden, Cheshire.

I have found a marriage between a James Smith and Mary Whitehead 1812 St Wilfrids Church Northenden, Cheshire

With the marriage of James and Mary being 1812 and the birth of George being 1813 could they be his parents.

When George married  Mary Wood on the wedding certificate his father was named as James

Please can you advise me as to how I go about this searching for the correct parents. Many thanks

Perhaps he was actually born before the couple were married. Have you tried looking for George Whitehead in 1811 or 1812. If you got George's she from census returns they are only as good as what was written by the householder.

Hello Anita,

Is there an occupation for James on the marriage certificate of George and Mary?

Thank you both for your replies. I will check for George under the name of Whitehead. The occupation for James on the wedding certificate for George and Mary is Gardener.

Yes I've just found the marriage of George and Mary.
Linking this to your other post about this family we didn't have George on the 1841 Census.
Mary was living with her son Thomas and her mother Esther Wood.
I think this is possibly George on the 1841 census,
James Smith 50
George 25
Hannah 15
William 10
All born Cheshire and living at Gatley Green Stockport Etchells.
Both James and George are Gardeners and George did give his occ as Gardener on the baptisms of his children.

Dear Rolnora, Thank you email. Following your reply I revisited my search for George's baptism record and found him baptised at a church in Cheadle, Cheshire. Hannah and William I think could be his siblings (1841 Census)  were also baptised in Cheadle Cheshire (parents James and Mary) The transcript records did not list which church.

Do you know where I could view the  original documentation of the baptism records. I will first have to discover which church in Cheadle is CoE.

Mant thanks

Hello Anita,
If you have access you can view the records, with images, for the baptisms on Find my Past.
Or you can go to the Cheshire Register Database which is free to use and where you will find the records without images.
http://cgi.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/

In case you haven't used the cprd before you will need to click on database, then baptism. Select All Cheadle from the parish list and then enter surname. scroll through the pages until you find George [ page 3 ].Click on the circle and then the box with the three dots in it to bring up the record.

The church is St Mary's and it's CofE

Hi Anita,
I'm assuming that you have now found the baptism for George and noticed his mother's name was Ann. The other two children on the 1841 census have mother's name Mary so you could possibly be looking at two marriages for James.

The residence for George at his baptism is Northern Etchells.
Northern Etchells was a township in the parishes of Northenden and Stockport. This would be why he gives Northenden as his birthplace on all his census records.
