Could this be the birth certificate of their youngest daughter showing on the 1861
Birth June qtr 1853
Harriet Helps
Clifton    6a   110

That would show mothers maiden name

Rosie, do you mean for me to get hold of Harriett's birth cert?

There were also two older children: Esther b. 1847 & Robert b. 1850.

I was suggesting that it may be Harriet daughter of Robert & Esther.  The birth certificate is likely to be the only source of Esthers maiden name.  I could not see a birth registration for the other two children in Bath reg district.

I wonder if Robert & Esther did not marry until later  :-\

Thanks vm Rosie. That looks most likely. The 61 census also has Robert as 'general dealer'.

I'm also trying to find Robert with his family before 1851 with no success. Can you help?

Rosie. Thanks, I didn't know about the FreeReg site. Seems to give me what I was looking for. Should be really useful.

Regards, Jeff

I can't see him in 1841 yet.

Hope FreeReg is a lot of help.  Information is being loaded (by volunteers) on a regular basis so always worth checking back on it.

I always forget about BathBMD too, probably because I don't have much research in that area but it can be handy especially when checking birth registrations as in some cases it has mothers maiden name against the record. Strangely there is a Robert Helps birth reg in 1843 with mothers maiden name Watts but it does not tie in with the one you have age 1 in 1851  ::)
