Hi I'm a new member from Scotland looking for help to trace family history. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jinty, welcome to Rootschat.

If you tell us who you are looking for, I'm sure that someone will be able to help.

The first bit of advice is start with what you know and work steadily backwards. So start with yourself, that will give you your parents. From their marriage you will get at least their fathers' names.

Welcome Jinty and I hope you find what you are looking for :)

As Groom noted '' start with what you know and who you know'' - bearing in mind Rootschat policy on naming anyone still living.

Another idea would be to look for the specific shire/county/country on the regional boards and ask for advice in those areas , as people in those boards have specific local knowledge.

Go to the Forum button - up there 2nd from left- and scroll down to the appropriate location.

Good Luck :)

Have you read any books on the subject - they will give you many pages of advice, not just a few lines.

Thanks for quick replies. I've registered with 2 online sites, one free and one fee paying.Problem i have is i am putting in information which i already know but don't understand how to retrieve what i don't know.
What i'd like to do first is look into my father's ancestry to begin with.

Thanks Jinty

Okay - firstly is your father still alive? If so ask him for as much information as possible, or ask anyone who knew him.

Then post what you know on the relevant county on the Scottish section here. (Please don't mention names of people who are or may still be alive) Once you've done that people will be able to help you and guide you on the next steps.

Good luck.

Have you got your Father's birth information, and his parents' marriage certificate?

Thanks again. I've checked out the guidlines and had a look at the Scottish section.

I have good details on my father and grandfather, also incomplete information on my great grandfather.
To keep things simple to begin with I thought I would concentrate on researching my fathers family ancestry. I registered with Scotland's People and have credits with this site.

To be honest it all appeared straightforward but I'm finding things a little daunting as I don't know where or how to extract records.

All rather frustrating.
