S.S. Great Britain passenger lists 1871 U.K. to Melbourne, Victoria
« on: Saturday 31 October 15 03:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi.  I am very new to this but wonder if anyone can assist.  I'm looking for the passage of my ancestor, Samuel Francis Pritchard, born 1837 in Wales (Llanddewi r cwm Breconshire) as he immigrated down under to Australia and New Zealand.  There is some family story of him stopping in Australia first around 1870-73 as his sister lived in Melbourne.

I can find a Saml Pritchard on the Victoria Public Record office of passenger lists, sailing July 1871 to Australia on 'Great Britain' (aged 34) - on Fiche 304, page 4.  Is there a way to confirm if this was him and just as importantly can I confirm if this was the gorgeous 'S.S. Great Britain'.  I would be hugely excited if he did sail to Australia on the S.S. G.B. as my husband is from Bristol and as a family we just love this ship and have visited it many times when travelling over there from N.Z.

The 1871 census in England and Wales was 2 April, so have you found him still in Wales (or elsewhere) then - just to try and more precisely pinpoint him?

How many Samuel Pritchards of a similar age are there - about 3 or 4 born each year 1838 to 1848, so not too many which increases likelihood it is your man.

Added:
There is an extensive family tree for him on Ancestry - is it yours, or do you know about it?

Added:
Appears to be yours, so speculative?

If you contact Barrie Green, he may be able to help. The above is a 2009 thread, but Barrie is still active on RootsChat.

Thanks heaps. I'll.take a look. I can trace him to early 1871 with his family in Wales and again from 1872 in Oamaru in New Zealand.  So, just searching for tge missing piece.
Thanks again
