Witton/Warstone cemetary burials
« on: Sunday 01 November 15 15:26 GMT (UK) »
I have been asked by Australian relative to try and find a burial and death record for a member of our family which we have been searching for over 2 years. His name was William Rose Baker born in 1844.In 1871 census he was a Jeweller (Jappaner). In 1876 his youngest son John was born but in 1881 census his widow Anna(Hannah) was describing herself as a widow. The name is unusual and carried on through the family to early 1900's. We need help in how we proceed to find out more information about death/burial which we believe maybe in one of the above cemetaries because other family members are buried there

Are you looking for burials in Birmingham?
Central Library would probably be the best place to start.
The staff there are very helpful.

Thank you but I don't live in Birmingham and find it difficult to find information except on usual genealogy websites which are revealing nothing at the moment.

The Jewellery Quarter Research Trust has records of all people buried in the Warstone Lane and Key Hill cemereries (where names are known).  You could search their database for any family names you might have.   If your chap worked and lived around that area, then it might be that he was buried in either of those places.  But, there were many common graves, where I think not all of the names of people in those graves are known.    www.jqrt.org

If you find any of your people, then if you want copies of images of the original burial records they can be obtained for a fee, from the Birmingham & Midland Society for Genealogy & Heraldry shop,
www.bmsgh-shop.org.uk/BIRM-Cemeteries

Also I believe that Handsworth Cemetery oversees those two, and Witton, possibly other cemeteries, so you could try them, I gather they're very helpful, though haven't needed to contact them myself.

If you use a search engine for Handsworth Cemetery, Birmingham, and also Witton Cemetery, Birmingham, and Birmingham Cemeteries, there are lots of options to choose from that will tell you more, and give their contact details.

Hope this helps

I've just realised that you don't mention his actual death date/ year - do you know that he died by 1881, i.e. have you got a death record or other info besides what wifey said in the 1881 census?

I had a quick look at the jqrt site, but no obvious William Rose Baker.  But it could depend upon who was giving the information; if they simply referred to him as William Baker, or even Bill Baker, then that's what would be in the records.

Really, we need to know when he died, so that the burial records can be tied in with the death date/records.  The best place to start a check is the free bmd site:  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

I had a quick look at the freebmd site - the only William Rose Baker death record for Warwickshire/Worcestershire/Staffordshire between March 1871-Dec 1901 is for a 1yr old child, died Dec quarter 1901, in Aston district.    That could be your chap's grandson, maybe ?

thanks for all your info I will try them. We do not have a death date because we can't find one. His wife had remarried by 1991 and called herself a widow then as well .her name was Hannah Marie Baker nee Bill. Called Anna in census.
