North London Schools 1935-1945
« on: Monday 02 November 15 18:47 GMT (UK) »
This is a long shot, but I'm desperately trying to find anyone who ever knew my husbands birth mother Helen Barbara Weinberg,or Weinburg, born 1930, died 1957. She lived in Stroud Green Road, Islington in 1939, then in Ambler Road N4 in 1943. I'm wondering if she went to Stroud Green Primary, or later to Highbury Fields School. I know that school was evacuated during WW2 to Huntingdon. Time is running out for us. My husband is desperate to find a photo of her, all my research and contact with family has produced nothing. So wondered if anyone in this wonderful forum had any leads. Thanks.
P.s. Helens father was Edward Simeon Weinberg, her mother Phyllis Adelaide Weinberg nee Weber.nthanks.

Have you contacted either of those schools? Looking on Highbury Fields School website they gave an 'Old Girls' area with contact information. Someone may be able to go through the register and see if she was enrolled , the primary school may be able to do the same.

I haven't yet but I looked at their websites, must have missed the 'old girls' bit. Thanks for taking the trouble to look. I will try tomorrow. Thanks very much Nettie.

Nettie's suggestion is very positive. School records are often good for the period you are looking at. Apart from records, you are more likely to find year photos etc around this time.

Hope you find what you are looking for  :)

Thanks Monica. I've emailed the Old Girls Secretary at the secondary school, and will try to find a contact at the primary . Trouble is I believe a lot of kids were evacuated in this area, so I expect their schooling was disrupted, but it's worth a go.thanks for your kind wishes.

You said that family contact and research had yielded nothing. Are there siblings to Helen or her parents? Did she marry your husband's father?  Do you know if her death was noted in a local paper?

Her death was recorded in the local paper, yes, as there was an inquest that gave accidental death. However, we have spoken to two people who knew her slightly, who lived at the same address, it seemed it was suicide. I have done extensive research, and unfortunately there are no siblings, and her parents siblings are dead. Managed to contact a distant cousin who knows nothing. My husbands father must now be dead, unfortunately cannot trace anything much there  he never married Helen and had a common name that's made it very hard to trace. In spite of all the facts I have about her and her family, my husband really only wants to know what she looked like. We were given a description of her, but school photos were a long shot, last attempt. Still you never know!

Thanks for the answers. Please forgive all the questions, I'm just trying to brainstorm possibilities. Have you seen the local paper? Chances are there was no photo but you never know. Also have you gotten a copy of the coroners report? Once again, chances are there is no photo but ...
