carr brow name in high lane Cheshire
« on: Tuesday 03 November 15 12:41 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how Carr brow name came about in High lane Cheshire? My family the Greens and Arderns lived here in the very old home which appears to be the only house on the early tithe maps on the right hand side heading from Buxton road to Jacksons edge. I would be delighted if anyone knew the  early name of this home. My family re named it Inglenook. Thank you.

The Place-Names of Cheshire by J. McN.Dodgson has in part one, page 284 under Marple, Carr Brow 1831, kjarr 'brushwood, marsh', bru, cnoll. The meaning seems to be  a marshy hill. A bru is certainly a steep hill, cb
