Searching for a bungalow named "Pakistan"
« on: Wednesday 04 November 15 20:10 GMT (UK) »
My cousin shared a memory of our Grandparents and wondering if it rings a bell with anyone.

He said they lived in a bungalow (named Pakistan) along the old main road in the village of Hardwick.
They lived there until our Grandmothers' death 01 July 1950.

Fingers crossed !

As it's possible the bungalow has been renamed - or has no actual name, it would be better if you bought a copy of your grandmothers death cert which should have the full address.

If your grandmother/father left a will, you can search here as probate entries for that period show the address

Nothing in the Probate search.

Not surprised.
My grandparents never purchased a home.

Have you tried finding them and the actual address in the 1939 Register?

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register

You can search for free but will have to buy & use credits to see the full entry or post a request here

Just an off chance but it has worked for me in the past and might be worth a try-

Often the name of a property appeared on the gate or pillar at the roadside/footpath or, especially in towns, over the doorway/next to the door/on the front door. Long after the occupants used the house name these markers remained. So, if Google Streetview covers the road you could 'walk' along the street looking for bungalows and checking for clues.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

That would be a very unusual house name, as the state of Pakistan was only formed in 1947.
The older name for the region, "Pakstan" was coined in 1933 but wasn't widely used at the time.

Well, my ears may have misheard what my cousin said, so we'll go with "Pakstan."

I have no idea what is the proper name for "the old main road" through Hardwick, so I don't know how I could "walk" through using google maps.

Contact the Parish council ~ that is a very good idea!

I have gone to the 1939 register but uncertain how many credits I want to buy at this time.

Thank you to everyone for your insight.

Often a name people gave to a property was a corruption of two names Pak- Stan?
