There's a public tree on Ancestry for Enid Mabel Kettle and Carl Adrian Askroth

Hi Dawnsh,

Many thanks for your reply & Info re divorce searches & costs, much appreciated.

It certainly isn't required for legal purposes, I was just curious regarding the 5 and a half month gap between Enid's remarriage & Albert's death. I certainly cannot afford the £65 at present anyway! ;D

Are there divorce indexes at the National Archives, as I seem to remember using something there a few years ago to find my maternal gt grandparents divorce in 1942, but cannot remember exactly what it was? If memory serves me correctly, it just showed the names of the parties involved in the divorce and the date? Although I could be wrong! ;D

My thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Ancestry have the case files upto 1911

TNA have an index upto 1937

After that, you have to pay.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/divorces/

I would expect the 2nd marriage cert to state that the previous marriage had been dissolved. Whether or not that actually happened is where the £65 search comes in.

From experience and comments made by HMCTS, a lot of people start divorce proceedings, get the decree nisi but don't go back to court at a later date to make it absolute. So they aren't divorced at all.

I think I'd rather pay £9-25 for Enid's marriage cert than £65 for a possible divorce paper. and see what it says about her marital status. :)

Maybe he'd gone abroad and they hadn't heard from him for ages,so had him declared dead (7 years I think?)

Hi Dawnsh & Carol8353,

Many thanks for your replies very much appreciated.

Dawnsh, Many thanks for info regarding whereabouts of divorce indexes etc, much appreciated.

Carol8353, I would rather pay the certificate price over the divorce record as well! I believe you are right about the 7 year length for declaring someone dead as well.

Thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi all,

Have just discovered this in the London Gazette of 4th November 1932 for Albert William Reginald Duly: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/33880/page/7002/data.pdf

He is mentioned on the lower right hand side, under the date of October 25th 1932, followed by 'After open competition' within the Customs & Excise department list of names.

Only problem is, I don't understand what it means! Is it just a list of Customs & Excise officers? Or is it something else?

Anyone any ideas?

Kind regards

David

It's just announcing his appointment as an Officer of Customs & Excise. "Open Competition" is a recruitment process.
