James Maton
« on: Sunday 08 November 15 06:12 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information, especially a marriage and births of children for James Maton who was born about 1780 and was an apprentice baker in Salisbury about 1793. In the 1841 census he had 2 daughters Amelia Sophia and Jane Eliza, no wife and he was listed as a baker, born in foreign parts.  He may have been the baker who wrote about “Tricks of bakers” in a letter to the Lord Mayor in London about 1824. Sarah Elizabeth Maton and Mary Ann Maton who immigrated to Tasmania in the 1830s are most likely his daughters.  He died in Tasmania Australia in 1847.

Amelia Rose Maton married James Thomas Hackett in 1851:

28 Jan 1851, Parish Church Of St Marylebone In Middlesex
Father:   Jas. Maton

On 1851 Census Amelia S Hackett aged 33, gives her place of birth as St Pancras, Middlesex

There is a James Maton marriage to a Hume Phillips in St Pancras 17th Oct 1808. Both "of this parish".
There is also a James Maton marriage in 1849 in St Pancras, father listed as James, "dead".

Margaret Phillips Maton, baptised 19th June 1814.
Robert Maton, baptised 21st April 1816.
Eliza Meton, baptised 8 Jul 1810.
All at St Pancras, all children of James and Hume.
This James is listed as a carrier on Margaret's baptism, so not sure if we have the right one.

OK, I've had a look at the 1841 census (which I probably should have in the first place). Jane was born out of county, Amelia in it.
Jane Maton, baptised 5 June 1814, All Cannings, Wiltshire, parents James and Ruth.

Hello Kojo,
Don't know it this is any help to you or not but Sarah Elizabeth MATON c1811 married my GG grandfather Samuel RIDLER (c1806-11 Aug 1853) in Hobart Tasmania on 29 October 1840 and she died 13 July 1860.
Mary Ann married Joseph HEWLETT but have no further details to hand at the moment.

Hi Heather
Samuel Ridler is my GGGrandfather. I am researching the Maton family, Sarah Elizabeth/Elizabeth Sarah and Mary Ann and Eliza, all of whom lived and died in Tasmania, as did James. I have not been able to confirm from where they originated and their history before going to Tasmania.
I have made contact with the Maton family in Perth, James and Hume's decendants but have not found a link.
Would appreciate any help with this family.
