The only one I can find is an 1861 James b 1847, with father James & Mum Margaret, but in Shropshire, and a mining family....
There's one born in about the right place for you, at Darleston Staffs, with James and Ann for parents, but in 1848....
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Hi Anne,
Can I ask if you have the marriage certificate for James and Catherine ?
I can't see anything other than the records that ThrellfalYorky posted but looking at the 1861 census for James with father Samuel does [as the person at Ancestry said] fit quite well.

Was James's first son called Samuel?
Do you have them in 1881? FamilySearch has an entry for James and Catherine Bucknall with son
Samuel
J. Bucknall aged 5.
They are boarders with George and Mary Brown. (39 and 33 yrs old)
James b. 1846 Wolverhampton.
George and Mary Brown and Catherine Bucknall all born in Scotland.

The Wolverhampton Index doesn't show any James Bucknall/Bucknell baptised in Wolverhampton.
http://www.wolverhamptonhistory.org.uk/resources/indexes
Have you investigated the James Bucknall registered in Wolverhampton in the 4th quarter of 1844 (Vol 17 p341)?

Searching Freebmd only shows two births in Woverhampton for a James Bucknall/Bucknell
The one that Bevj has given you and another one in the March qtr of 1849 vol 17 pg 126
It is possible that his birth wasn't registered, or could it be that he was born before his parents marriage in which case his birth would be registered in his mother's maiden name.
It's also possible that James was illegitimate and used James as his father's name on his marriage cert to save any embarrassment.
Sorry
