It all goes a bit brain melty..

James (1842) has children shown in the 1871 census, with Jane Mepham (Thomas Isaac, Charles, Eliza)

Jane dies in 1870(I think), then James remarries Mercy Anne Barnes, who also dies, so finally, he remarries Elizabeth Gosden in 1878.

James Spong (1845) is the one on the census in 1871 as the servant... I think.

PS what is the census ref for the James Spong b c 1845 you possibly have as a Servant or where is he in 1871?

I think James Spong 1845(ish) is showing up as 1849 on the 1871 census.

Chobham, Piece 806, folio 168, page 9.

In a household with Thomas Mepham, Sarah Hayward and John Taylor.

Thomas Isaac was an incorrect entry I had, I got mixed up with all the Isaacs, so ignore that one.

The fun continues by the way, I am working on Mercy Anne Barnes family at the moment, and that is a whole other mess  :P

:) OK would you agree the death in 1875 was a James Spong aged 27 ie birth year c 1848/9? He is with parents James/Harriett in 1851/61 and a Servant as you say 1871 but born 1848/9 on 1851/61/71?

Yep, I would agree with that.

Thank you for your help.

If the Barnes still give me trouble, I will pop a post on the Hampshire board.
