I have my RC email settings set so that I never receive any!

I simply login, and click on the [ New Replies ] at the top of the screen.

Maybe you should start doing that, rather than rely on email notifications?

A person might not always have responded in a thread, but has an interest in how it develops, so asks to be notified when new responses come in.   I do it sometimes when a problem is interesting but it will never show the thread in 'new replies' as I haven't taken part in the thread.
