George Goater b 1815 Stepney, Middlesex
« on: Monday 09 November 15 15:06 GMT (UK) »
On the 1851 census George Goater b c 1815 in Stepney is a butcher with wife Ann (Abbott)
Ref:  HO107 piece 1551 folio 203 page 14

By 1871 he's a retired butcher - Ref RG10 piece 891 folio 68 page 2.

I have both his marriage to Ann and later Frances Palmer and his death in 1892 in Gravesend, Kent.

Can anyone find him on the 1841 census and/or a baptismal record for him? I can't seem to find him before 1843 and his marriage to Ann.

Many thanks  ;D

St Anne Limehouse
marriage 26 September 1843 after banns
George Goater f/a bachelor mariner of Limehouse
father "not known"
Anne Abbott f/a spinster of Limehouse
father Charles Abbott "dead"

Witnesses: Thomas Abbott
                 Martha Abbott

Added sorry, I see that you already have this - but it may be helpful to anyone else who is looking.
William and Sarah Goater don't seem to have baptised any other children in London, but if that baptism is your man it's a bit strange that George is sure of his age and birthplace, but not his father's name.

Great, so he obviously remembered his father's name by the time he married again!  ;D ;D That seems to confirm that the baptism is right as the father's name and occupation are the same.

No sign of him so far in 1841.

Dear Groom & Galium

Thank you for your valuable input and for all the extra information which I didn't have.

It all seems a good fit except the occupation - is it a stretch from mariner to butcher or might he have been some sort of cook on a ship?

I'd seen William the carpenter in Limehouse but there are sooooo many William Goaters it's hard to work out who is who. Interesting, as you say, that only George was baptised in London.

Shame about the 1841 I was hoping it would give me some clues re his background, unless he's on a ship somewhere.

Thanks again  ;D

As he says he is a mariner in 1843 I'd say that was a good possibility. I have several ancestors who were mariners before their marriages, then they settle down to another occupation.
