1939 Register
« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 12:05 GMT (UK) »
In searching the 1939 Register I have discovered my relative at an address which says New Southgate,Harrow U.D., Middlesex on a page with only women listed, various ages. I suspect its a Hospital, as she died in 1943 at Friern Hospital, Frien Barnet, which I know was a Mental Hospital. Any idea how I can tell where she was in 1939, as you cant look at the previous page to find the address. She died of chronic nephritis, according to the death certificate, with the words Indefinite PM, certified by a Doctor. Can I assume she was there as a Mental patient? Any ideas?

According to wikipedia there were 12 wards of Friern Hospital requisitioned for use by the Emergency Medical Services and St Bartolomews hospital - so you can't assume she was the for mental health reasons

That's true, and she did die of chronic nephritis, so maybe you're right. Thanks.
Any ideas about the New Southgate address on the register though. It's all women, so might be a hospital, what do you think?

Wouldn't male and female patients still have been strictly segregated in 1939?

What was the piece number? Getting hits for Friern Hospital in Harrow U.D., piece number 0777c

Thanks JonW on my printout, it says Schedule 7 sub number 161. Don't know about Piece numbers. Where would I find that?  My 1939 record is from Find my Past.

Hi
You have to look for it now in the URL. Findmypast have removed the piece/item numbers from the free preview. And on their .com site today it is also gone now. Did they not give it to you if you bought the record?

Can you see it in the address bar
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/locked?id=tna%2fr39%2f0777%2f0777c%2f024%2f14

piece 0777c, item 024 (in bold in the example)

Hi
All you can do with it is put those numbers in the piece/item boxes on the advanced search. No names needed. Which should bring your lady up again in the results, along with everyone else on the page (which you have)

Friern was a very big hospital, so I would imagine that anyone in piece 0777c was in there, but I can't say for sure.

Feel very stupid now as Ive just revisited the page on the Register online and you can go to previous pages! I did this and found that it was Friern Hospital. So I now know that she was there in 1939, and died there in 1943, although i dont know if she was suffering mental health issues or physical ones. I suspect she may have been there for a while as the electoral registers have her husband with another woman from 1937 to 1939.Thanks for your help though, much appreciated.
