Hi, my maternal great grandmother was Florence Colvet BRADLEY born in Australia - her father was William Bradley an engineer (shown as deceased on wedding certificate for Florence and Gt Grandfather George Alexander CLARK (A mariner from Aberdeen) in 1904 in Sunderland.) though I have no other details.
Florence Colvet BRADLEY was illiterate and only made her mark on her wedding certificate.
On the 1911 census she is shown as being head of the household and a confectioner and living with three children. Her birth is shown as Australia, however to the right of that is some writing I cannot work out - I initially thought British but it has two many vertical strokes.

So my double enquiry is - what is shown in on the attached census and how do I find details on FC Bradley? I have trawled Ancestry and FindMyPast worldwide and can find no trace of her.

WOOD - Sunderland descendants of Thomas WOOD Master Mariner - b1805 in Stockton and Jane HORNSBY.

CLARK - Forebears - my great grandparents George Alexander CLARK (Mariner) born app 1879 Aberdeen married Sunderland 1904 to Florence Colvet BRADLEY b abt 1882 in Australia
KNAPP (Mariners) - ex of Kent moving to Seaham.
APPLEBY - Seaham Harbour (Children of Great x 2 Uncle John (boat owner) inc. Sir Alfred Appleby moved away).

JONES - Seaham Harbour Great Grandfather Thomas Emrys JONES b1868

I think it says British Subject (Brit Sub) by Parentage.

Thanks Stan. I cannot see it being anything too out of the ordinary - the S in the black writing in that case is obviously different to the S in the Sunderland in blue writing so perhaps written by someone else. Your suggestion of course makes good sense.

How do you know she was born in Australia?
The census says 'Australia resident' which does not necessarily mean she was born in Australia.
Do you know her age in 1911?
Have you looked in ALL Australian states' BDM indices for her birth? Each state runs its own registry, with varying dates of commencement.  Before official commencement you are reliant on church records which are often very scant.

Florence Colvet BRADLEY was illiterate and only made her mark on her wedding certificate.

She signed the census form, so was not illiterate.

The census says 'Australia resident' which does not necessarily mean she was born in Australia.

It does not mean "Australia Resident". It means resident in this country. This is the instruction on the 1911 census schedule

Hi... Looks like 'British by Parentage'.  I couldn't find a birth in Australia.  Maybe the spelling is a bit off.
