Kate Waters in school or working clothes?
« on: Friday 13 November 15 13:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to guess an approximate date for the attached photo.  The second in from the left (next to the lady who appears to be crocheting) is my grandmother (born in 1900) but I'm hopeless at guessing age so hoped there might be a clue in the girls clothing.

Thank you
Fiona

Good evening,

I would have agreed with that until I looked at the bottom of their boots. Unless they put on soft over boots when entering the factory.

Nailed boots and explosives don't go together.

I think they look a bit too old for school but it does look like a work uniform.

My first thought was munitions workers but John makes a good point. They may not of course been working with explosives but involved in other types of war work as this was standard dress for the time.
I would suggest at least late war & maybe even post war. 1917-20.

I think all the girls look very young - at a guess,  anything from early to late teens. :-\

The young lady second from left and the one far right look physically quite mature. School leaving age for my parents in the 1930s was 14, I think the ones I mentioned look older than that. (But having said that I was more or less fully grown by 12 so what do I know.   ::)   :) )

I think they all have young faces. Some are just more flat chested than others.  ;)
