There is one way of finding Frances's birth surname - a copy of that 1849 marriage cert as it will give her fathers name

You mean the 1840 one?
Yes, I suppose so.
That might be the only way to finally nail this aspect of the line.

But even then - that won't solve the identity of the mother of James and John. :(
I'm now beginning to wonder if Jeremiah might indeed be another brother and that the mother to them all was actually the McCririck mentioned earlier ...

Given her age in 1840 - I suspect she was married before Brown so the hunt goes on!!

The marriage record says she was 54 and a spinster  :)

27 April 1840, St Mary, Scarborough, by Licence
John Lownsborough 72 Widower Gentleman. Fathers name: Dead
Francis (sic) Brown, 54 Spinster.  Fathers name: Blank
Both of Aubro Street

John signed, Frances made her mark (a circle). Witnesses look like Henry Stephenson & Wm Potter
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

Well, that's excellent, Jomot!
Thank you very much.
So, she was a spinster. I bet she thought life was going to pass her by and then - BOOM! She weds twice in a couple of years.
Thanks again.

Now, John's first wife ...

Now, John's first wife ...

So we don't know who, where or when  - walk in the park then  ;)

I hoped the witnesses to John's marriage to Frances might confirm one of the sons at least but no, the witnesses were George Tindall & Mary Wells.  John also leaves his fathers details blank  :-X

For reference, the marriage was November 14 1842 by Licence. John & Frances both made their mark.

Ha, ha!  ;D
You are so right, Jomot.
As you might have seen earlier in the thread, I DID point out that this chap has been problematic since Day One!

Thanks for the info on his marriage licence; most unhelpful weren't they?!  ;D

I would also remind you (and any others keeping an eye to this thread) that assuming this is the right chap - and I'm sure that it is, now - John Dobson was baptised in Wakefield on 17th July 1775 and his father was named as John Dobson. Unfortunately, no mother was mentioned.

Interestingly there was a James Dobson baptised Wakefield 08 Jun 1778, also son of John. Possibly died 1780.
