COUSINS family in Langford, Beds. in 1871 Census
« on: Thursday 14 July 05 18:26 BST (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
Could some kind person please have a peep at the 1871 Census for Langford, Bedfordshire.  I have the COUSINS family in Front Street, Langford, in the 1881 Census, and the head of the family is William COUSINS, b. circa 1839, a "Publican and Bookmaker". (This might be a mistranscription for "bootmaker") I was wondering whether he might have been running a pub in Langford in 1871 - no pub name is given in 1881.
The rest of the family would have been at least their children William, b. 1867; George, b.1868; Emma, possibly, b.1871; all were born in Langford.  William's wife was Emma, b. 1843, Thorfield.
Very best wishes,
Keith

Hello again, Willow,
Thanks so much for coming up with this entry so swiftly, and it does seem as though the "Publican" theme rather dies a death with this.  However, if I can impose on your kindness one more time, do you have access to the 1891 Census to see whether there is any evidence of anything there (family folklore says he was a pub landlord at some stage); and also to perhaps complete the whole family with another couple of children, maybe...
Very best wishes,
Keith

Willow,
Sorry it's taken a while to reply with my thanks again - we have friends from Denmark staying at the moment - but you've been very resourceful as usual, and have turned up another surprise in that William Cousins, b.1839, died so young.  I now have lots of certificates to order...
Very best wishes,
Keith

This family were living in Water End, Langford at time of 1891 census...there is reference to Wm COUSINs in Water End [Red Cow Inn?] in 1899.

at Water End, Langford with 2 enclosed yards at the back containing a range of timber built buildings, a well of water, etc abs E High Rd from Biggleswade to Hitchin on 80ft front S property now or late of E Barringer W & N property formerly belonging to M O Seward but recently sold to - Daniels formerly in tenure of Jn Steed and now of E K & H Fordham or undertenant Wm Cousins ...

There is a pub in Langford called 'the Red Cow' in the High Street...is that the same place?

Hi, Cathy,
Thanks very much for that fascinating link - and yes, apparently Ruth Cousins, daughter of William Cousins, b.1867, was born above The Red Cow.  I'm sorry but I'm not sure whether it exists as a pub today...
Very best wishes,
Keith
