Hunting all versions of Uriah Turner! Wiltshire/Somerset
« on: Saturday 14 November 15 13:21 GMT (UK) »
In an attempt to break through a thick brick wall I am following any possible lead, however tenuous. Working on the principle that names carry down through generations I have discovered a few possible connections. The strongest to date is a TURNER family in Monckton-Deverill listed here https://sites.google.com/site/nilsengenealogy/Home/turner
My ancestor Mary Boulter (nee Turner) it seems had a sister named Esther (or Hester) and a son named Uriah Turner BOULTER. Mary's son may have been named after his uncle Uriah perhaps. Mary's birth would have been in the 1790s so could well match with this family. According to her death certificate she was born in Wiltshire.

I have also found an entry on the 'Net of a William Uriah Turner HANCOCK. (b. 1904 in Bath, Somerset). He married Irene Janet DENNIS in 1935 and he died in 1966. Is it possible that the name "Uriah Turner" has passed down through generations of family? William U. T. Hancock may be in the living memory of somebody out there that maybe able to help.

If anybody has any news of a person with "Uriah Turner" somewhere in their name any lead would be greatly appreciated.

The FreeREG website has the baptism of a Uriah TURNER in 1831 (born 1822) in Bath, Somerset (full details on the website).

Hi,

William Uriah Turner HANCOCK. (b. 1904 in Bath, Somerset) and Irene Janet DENNIS were my great grandparents. I'm just starting work on the family tree but have a contact who has extensive knowledge of the Hancocks in the Witshire area so may be able to give you more information some time soon :-).

Hi, I wrote earlier- according to my grandfather, his father William Uriah Turner HANCOCK (b. 1904) has Turner in his name because Turner was William's mother's maiden name. However, unsure where the Uriah came from. Don't know if this of any use but good luck breaking through the wall,

James

Hi James, thanks for your message. It looks like I might be bashing through this wall for quite some time. One of the reasons the Turner/Boulter line intrigues me is that there are some colourful characters (perhaps vindictive would be a better word!). As an example, Mary (mother of Uriah Turner BOULTER) put the attached notice in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1845 about her own sister!

Fascinating stuff, love those skeletons! Would love to be able to talk to all those dead relatives and find out what they were like as people :-)

Do a Google search for Mary Turner BOULTER and many references will appear. It seems her will became some kind of legal test case and, while she died in 1866, the estate was not finalised until 1945! Many court cases between her son Uriah and his children re the estate. Mary owned a great deal of real estate in the centre of Sydney. Unfortunately the family frittered it away and what came down to me was 10 percent of stuff all!
