help tracking with no info other than names!

Hello,
Wonder if you could advise me on the best place to stat a search, i'm looking into my husbands nan's side, unfortunately relatives who may have had information have passed away or no nothing so i am going into this clueless!
What info do i have
Ethel Jean Shackleton b1933 Bury d 1997
Ann Shackleton b1936 Bury d 2014

They were the children of Thomas Shackleton & Ethel Saltonstall who married 1931 Bury Lancs.

1 piece of family lore thats interesting though not relevant at this point is that the Saltonstall's were related to Saltonstall's that went over to the US alongside the Mayflower

Anyway hope you can help.

Newspapers is always a good bet

My ex and I don't talk but I managed to piece together a good gathering of her side , through knowing names and guessing locations

The marriage certificate of Thomas and Ethel would be a good place to start. That will give you both father's names and occupations. Armed with that information a possible next move would be to find both families in the 1911 census.

Alternatively, or in addition, Thomas and Ethel's birth certificates will give you names of both sets of parents.

FreeBMD would be the place to search for those certificates and they can be purchased from the GRO using the reference numbers found on FreeBMD.

Just to make a start, looking on freebmd, surprisingly, there are three Ethel Saltonstall births.

The one which might fit in best time wise is the birth in 1912, registered in Todmorden district, with mother's maiden name Diggle. From here you would generally look for a marriage between a male Saltonstall and female Diggle.

You are looking at unusual names here which may make the search easier, but make allowances for mispellings.

I saw the Diggle one & it lead me to Alice Diggle & Milton Saltonstall, the family never seemed to move from Todmorden though that does not rule it out.  One thing that was interesting is that a child in this family Gladys Saltonstall in the records for her baptism underneath is an entry for a Lillian Shackleton!

There is no middle initial for Ethel on this marriage registration.  She seems to have been just Ethel.

Your right, so sorry had a brain drain & put down the daughters middle name on the mothers. So sorry.

No but this post made me think, the daughter Ann Shackleton married a chap from Bolton & there is a Ethel Shackleton whom died feb 1989 in Bolton born 27/3/1912.
