Hilson family Stonehouse Plymouth
« on: Sunday 22 November 15 11:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi, trying to find John Hilson born 1831 Parish of St Andrews Plymouth. Immigrated to Australia in 1854. I have lots of family from Devon but this one is eluding me.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome to Rootschat.

This looks like him in 1851, but not a lot of help. There is also a Sophia Parson with him in 1841

Thanks for your input, I have seen these and the 1841 senses is the closest I have come.  There is a baptism
John   Hilson   1831   1831   Anglican   George   East Stonehouse

Which I don't seem to be able to find on ancestory.

Thanks DOB7 was John listed as a child of his.

I have found a George and Nancy from St Andrews Plymouth married in 1822.  Its hard going trying to do these things remotely, but will persevere.

I will have a look for the 1832 death.  This would mean he died 1 year after John was born.

You also have the problem that you are working before formal registration of births, marriages and deaths, so will be relying on Parish Records, not all of which are on line.

The fact that his father died when he was so young could explain why he isn't with his parents in 1841 or 1851. His mother may also have died, or perhaps she remarried.

If the 1851 is correct and John is Sophia's nephew and Mary Sawyer is her mother, then it follows that Mary was John's grandmother. So his mother was Nancy Sawyer.
