Help Needed To Find My Great Great Grandparents!!
« on: Monday 23 November 15 11:15 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone
I'm a new RootsChat member so bear with me!
I need some help tracing my great great grandparents-Andrew Brown and Mary Ann Bannigan. Andrew's a mystery as he came from Glasgow and appeared in the Isle of Wight where he married my great great grandmother Mary Ann Bannigan. I've found them and their children including Charlie my great grandfather, in the 1891 and 1901 census before they both pass away in 1907 and 1908 respectively. I've found their marriage certificate from 1883, but when it comes to finding Mary Ann's origins I'm struggling a bit. On the marriage certificate I found through the Isle of Wight family history society, she is listed as Bannigan, Leal which struck me as odd. I can't find her as Bannigan Leal, but found 3 Mary Ann Leals with no trace of Bannigan anywhere!
Is there anyone who could help me trace these two? I'm waiting for a marriage certificate to arrive which is taking forever, but any hints or traces others may have found of these two would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
ERS1989

So if James bannigan dies before 1883 and his widow Mary Ann is the one who marries Andrew Brown then that looks like the answer
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Hi and welcome to Rootschat. If you've found your ancestors in the census records, it should show ages and places of birth. You mention Andrew Brown was from Glasgow; was this his birthplace?
A quick search on freebmd gives the answer to your problem. A Mary Ann Leal married a James Bannigan in 1880, registered in the Isle of Wight district. There doesn't seem to be a death for James Bannigan however.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Think James Bannigan is in Aldershot on 1881 Census, born 1854 Scotland. possible death for him in Egypt in 1882, GRO Army Death Indices (1881 to 1955) page 997

There is a birth for a james Edward Bannigan on IOW in Q3 1882.

On 1891 census Mary Ann is with Andrew Brown, one child is born Aldershot and they have a child James E with the Brown surname, but age would match someone born latter end of 1882 - beginning 1883.

Was Andrew Brown a soldier at one time which is why one child born in Aldershot?

All fits
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

This really is a clear case of how important the marriage certificate is - hope you receive it soon.

Mary's age seems consistent i.e. bc.1862 so looks like she could be the Mary Ann Leal birth reg'd Jun.1861 IOW (from census I think dau. of a William and Harriet).

Andrew too is also bc.1862 (Glasgow) and census shows a few born in Glasgow around this date so his fathers name/occupation is crucial in determining which Andrew is yours.

Please post the details on here when you eventually receive the marriage certificate.    Good Luck.
