Bengal Artillery
« on: Thursday 26 November 15 12:23 GMT (UK) »
Not sure which board I should use for this !

I have an ancestor whose occupation on his marriage in 1847 is "Corporal Bengal Artillery -  E F Co" which would seem to be the European Foot Co ?

After much googling the records seem to be with the  East India Company held  at the British Library

Would there be any information on lower ranks or just Officers ?

Advice appreciated

{He was born in 1799 and seems to be on the Westminster Rates Books from 1856 where he ran a lodging house until he died in 1866}

It might be worth checking Families in British India Society?
www.fibis.org

Scroll down and select FIBIS database.
Then "Find a Person".

The book I'm referring to is Researching Ancestors in the East India Company Armies by Peter A Bailey, published by FIBIS, 2006, ISBN 09547 11610. London recruitment lists start from 1817; other recruitment centres are later. Depot Description lists - before the recruit was sent overseas to India - also exist. These have been microfilmed by the LDS, so would be available at your local Family History Center, I would expect. There are also Embarkation Lists and records of service, Muster Rolls once in India, discharge records from 1830, and pension records - all filmed by the LDS. Looks like a very fruitful direction to investigate.

EFCo is surely a badly written E I Co ?
I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

The East India Company is always referred to as the Honourable East India Company - HEIC!

I think Kimbrey was correct - The Bengal Army consisted of Cavalry, Infantry, Engineering and Artillery.
The Artillery Regiments were:

    Bengal Horse Artillery
    Bengal European Foot Artillery
    Bengal Native Foot Artillery
Punjab Horse Artillery, Punjab Irregular Force

Yes,I am a bit unsure as to if the  "F" is an "I"   initially I thought it was a "T" !!

His name Richard Kimbrey { many varients} and he was born at Drayton Berkshire 1799
