Eyre and Spottiswoode Bible
« on: Friday 27 November 15 00:40 GMT (UK) »
I have a very old bible published by Eyre and Spottiswoode but I can find no reference to the print date. It was given to my mother when her grandfather passed away in 1951. Is there any way I can find out how old it is?

The only information I can offer is it was printed in London at 33 Paternoster Row, EC on HIS Majesty's special command and has a silk sewn leather cover. I can scan and post if that helps

Old bibles are notoriously difficult to date - print dates are virtually never used. Which version is it? King James or Standard Revised? I think Eyre, allng with OUP were the only printers authorised to print the latter

Hi Steve,

On the first page it says "To the most high and mighty Prince James" and below that " King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the faith, etc". It goes on with what appears to be a bit of a prologue.

Does that help at all?

Have you seen the wiki page? While you say your G-Grandfather was given the book as a boy wiki says they took over in 1845 ( Queen Vic) and their sons carried on under Edward VII.

There is also an Eyre and Spottiswoode Bible on a popular auction site suggesting it was 1839. Maybe have a look see and see which matches yours. :)

It's a King James then (Authorised). I'm sorry, but it could be any date after 1845 when E&S became the Queen's Printer. The phrase "his majesty's special command" refers to James I who authorised the translation in the 17th century

Can you tell me the name of the auction site either here or by private message please?

He was born in Australia in 1886 but spent a fair amount of time in London during and after WW1 after being wounded in France. He married an English nurse and moved back to Australia in the early 1920's.
